Intermediate Knitting - Level 4: Thrummed Mittens

Thrummed Mittens originate from England where discarded slubs of wool (referred to as “thrums”) were gathered and used in mittens for added warmth. The practice of inserting thrums into mittens was introduced to Newfoundland and Labrador by settlers. In the place of discarded pieces of wool, short bits of raw fibre were used, these mittens became precursors to what we know today as thrummed mittens.

Learn how to knit a pair of mittens and the technique of adding lengths of roving/carded wool to your knitting. The thrums create a soft woolly lining and a plush decorative stitch on the outside of the mitten. We will be using a Thrummed Mittens pattern that includes three sizes, one child & two adult sizes. You can choose the size you would like to knit, just be sure to have enough materials for the size you’ve chosen to knit.

You are welcome to bring your own roving and yarn, or purchase a kit from Numana Yarns. The pattern is available through Susan’s Ravlery designer page.

Students will be taught right- or left-handed, which ever they’re comfortable with.

Skill Level: have a solid understanding of the k and p stitch, familiar with a cable CO or long tail CO, and experience knitting in the round.

Please bring: a copy of the pattern, needles and notions listed in the pattern, enough yarn and roving for the size you have chosen to knit, and the cuff of one mitten completed, ready for the first thrum insertion round.

Pattern: “Thrummed Mittens” designed by Susan Chin, available through Ravelry.

Homework: Please have a cuff knitted for one mitten. We will send instructions for the cuff once you register for the class. Please bring listed materials, notebook and pen if you want to take additional notes.

Please note the classroom is upstairs (14 steps).
